Professional geoscience is committed to the highest ideals of ethics and public protection. Today’s geoscience professionals are highly educated and trained in the Earth sciences – the understanding and application of geoscience knowledge and theory.
Geoscience professionals can be found in a wide variety of positions including industry, academia, government and regulation, research, environmental protection and emergency relief to name a few. These knowledgeable professionals find many of the Earth’s raw materials used by society; help society understand natural hazards and how to mitigate their effects; and help minimize hazards created or made worse by society’s activities.
Geoscience professionals can be located by contacting your local geoscience regulator or professional organisation, or by looking up the key words geology, geoscience, geoscientist, geological in your local directory or in an online search. Of course there are other key terms which will help to narrow your search, such as environmental, hydro, geochemist, geophysicist among others. However, the above mentioned terms are a good starting point.
When hiring a geoscience professional remember |
---|
If geoscience is a regulated profession in your area, check with the local professional geoscience regulator/organisation to determine if the geoscientist is a member in good standing. |
If geoscience is not a regulated profession in your area, check with the local geoscience organisation/society, if one is available, to determine if the geoscientist is a member; or ask to see the geoscience professional’s credentials (level of education/training, work experience) and ask for references. |
